It also marked Wyatt's first (and only) village trip.  Village trips are bitter sweet for me.  I love to see where my patients come from and I LOVE meeting the health aids I work with by telephone every day, but when I leave, the boys tend to decompensate.  It's a huge stress for our family.

With Kolin's childhood home in the abandoned town of Flat only an hour away, we have both a destination and a place to stay.   Kolin and his cousin Jason made the trek from Washington state though Canada and into Alaska with the plane and my new Ikea sink in May. Less wind, less general frigidity, and a little more time outside.   It is 29 degrees outside today, very comfortable when letting the dog out - who for some reason still complains.  The boys have been working on being a little more athletic. The word "subsistence" meant little to me before I moved to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, and even less before I moved to Alaska.  It is such a big concept and it is so important.  I should have posted about it long ago.

I wasn't sure if Owen was mature enough to handle it, but the attitude of the ladies running it was very laid back.  They seemed eager to give every child who showed up for the audition a shot.  I was worried about the audition, but it turned out all Owen had to do was stand there and look cute. Emmonak is a large village (about 1000 Yupik Eskimos) on the delta of the Yukon River, just a few miles from the Bering Sea. Emmonak is a hub for several villages at the mouth of the Yukon including Alukanuk, Kotlik, and Nunam Iqua. I just let the dog out.  Kolin's snoozing.  Owen if flapping his arms in a bird costume on the Wii.It is 7 degrees outside.  The humidity is 92%.  Thus the weather is "Freezing fog."  So One of the pleasures of cold livin' is having to unfreeze the dog tether clasp with your warm hand on a cold day so it will thaw/open.  I will never miss this.
